About Me

Welcome to Tyler Mitchell's personal web site and blog. I have been working in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) industry for over a decade, with a focus on natural resource management and forestry.
Most recently, I became the Executive Director for the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo.org) - whose mission is to promote and support the development of open source tools focused on mapping and geospatial analysis. I am responsible for helping our board of directors, committees and members reach these goals.
I am also the author of an O'Reilly book on open source GIS and web mapping tools: Web Mapping Illustrated. The book teaches introductory geospatial data management and map projections, building a simple MapServer-based web map, using PostGIS, programming with MapScript, using web services and more.
